Topic: Density
Objective: In this experiment, students will learn about the scientific principles: density and polarity.
Research Question: Will the lava lamp erupt?
Materials:
- Vegetable oil
- Clear, empty bottle
- Alka-Seltzer tablet
- Food coloring
- Pitcher of water
- Chopstick or long pencil (for stirring)
Experimental Procedure:
- Pour the vegetable oil into the bottle, filling it about 2/3 full.
- Fill the remaining 1/3 of the bottle with water, but leave 1 inch of space from the top.
- Add 10 or more drops of food coloring to the bottle of water and oil.
- Stir the mixture with a chopstick or long pencil.
- Break the Alka-Seltzer into 4 pieces and add a piece one-by-one to the bottle.
- Watch the lava lamp go!
